Meet the Team: Josh Heyneke, Account Manager
Josh Heyneke is part of our account management team, covering Wales. Alongside working for Regenerate Outcomes, Josh runs a 10-acre farm in Carmarthenshire with wife Abi.
Josh grew up in Cape Town but moved to London aged 19. After another stint living in South Africa, he and Abi returned to the capital where he worked in sales and project management.
However, yearning for the outdoor life, they gave up their careers in the city to buy the farm.
“We sold our flat in London and made the move to Wales to try and farm on a small scale. We had no farming experience. It was a crazy decision really,” says Josh.
“We left the city to find a good and simple life. It has actually made life a lot more hectic, but a lot more interesting as well.”
For about seven years they ran the UK’s only organic certified duck egg operation from their flock of Khaki Campbells.
Although they have stopped producing eggs commercially, the farm still has ducks and a small number of sheep for personal consumption.
Abi and Josh also produce compost and earthworms and grow a variety of crops.
The farm is also home to a herd of guinea pigs, which they use for grazing, weed control and for meat.
They are experimenting with a variety of ways of growing organic blueberries in a silvopasture system, with fruit, trees and livestock working together.
Abi runs the farm day-to-day, while Josh splits his time between the farm and his work for Regenerate Outcomes.
“I see my job at Regenerate Outcomes as helping people understand what we do and the space we work in,” says Josh.
“The focus on soil health, soil carbon measurement and the whole market and industry around soil carbon credits is new.
“My job is to make it clear to farmers what the benefits of the programme are and how it can be applied to their particular farm and context.
“Carbon has been talked about in such a negative way in farming for a long time, with farmers being told that livestock can only be bad for the environment. It is really exciting to be able to present them with an opportunity which will help their businesses, demonstrate they are having a positive impact and generate revenue at the same time.
“I think farmers sometimes feel like they have to make a choice between environmental benefits and food production. What really attracts them to Regenerate Outcomes is that they can stack the two at the same time. ”
“I think farmers sometimes feel like they have to make a choice between environmental benefits and food production. What really attracts them to Regenerate Outcomes is that they can stack the two at the same time.
“Many farmers want to make changes that will benefit nature but they also want to carry on keeping cows and sheep. The programme is enabling them to continue doing that but just in a slightly different manner.
“I am really lucky to work in an area which is also my main passion and interest and be able to speak to and learn from so many knowledgeable farmers and some of the leading names in regenerative agriculture.
“It’s also exciting to be at the cutting edge of environmental outcomes and be part of this movement towards regenerative thinking as a fundamental way to tackle so many problems, not just in farming, but in society more widely.”
